Understanding Electroencephalogram (EEG) for Better Brain Health

by | May 4, 2023 | Tips & Information | 0 comments

Our brain may be the most complicated part of our body, containing hundreds of billions of cells interlinked through trillions of connections. How does one understand or even measure these brain frequencies that are going on inside our brains? There are five types of brain waves, from the slowest to the fastest, and are measured by frequency, which is cycles per second, or hertz (Hz). Using a portable EEG device, these brain waves (or brain frequencies) can be recorded for better understanding and monitoring.

The five types of brain waves

Delta brain waves are the slowest but highest amplitude brain EEG Frequency Chartwaves. During meditation and deep sleep, the brain produces delta brain waves, the slowest type of brain wave but with the highest amplitude. They measure between 0.5 and 4 Hz.

Theta brain waves are also classed as “slow.” They are linked to creativity, intuition and can be a repository for memories and emotions. It also happens when you are extremely relaxed, producing more theta waves. They measure between 4 and 8 Hz.

Alpha brain waves lie in the middle of the brain wave spectrum. These waves are produced when the brain is not focusing on a direct task. You are most likely feeling relaxed and calm, and you are not planning to tackle any task requiring concentration. These waves measure between 8 and 12 Hz.

Beta waves frequencies enable conscious thought and logical thinking. They can elicit a stimulating effect which allows the brain to focus. You are alert and wide awake, making decisions, with your brain producing higher-speed beta waves, which measure between 12 and 35 Hz.

Gamma waves are involved in cognitive functioning, information processing, learning, solving problems, and memory. These waves are very high frequency, where the brain produces the fastest of brain waves. These measure upward of 35 Hz.

These are fundamental parameters when measuring EEG. All these will make sense to the professionals in this field, but the question remains… how can understanding these brain waves help us become better or to overcome brain health challenges?

How does it help the rest of us humans? How can it help us understand ourselves better?

Measuring brain waves using EEG devices: training for better brain health

Measuring brain waves for better understanding and training is possible using Neeuro’s SenzeBand 2 and the NeeuroOS platform. Portable or wearable EEG devices have been helpful in understanding mental states. Having immediate feedback from real time brain activity enables you to track, measure, and adapt and get better results.

Understanding brain waves of children, adults and seniors using SenzeBand 2 with NeeuroOS platform

The all-new Neeuro SenzeBand 2 is a non-invasive device that captures brain wave signals, and together with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms of NeeuroOS, can interpret in real time, various mental states like attention, relaxation, mental workloads, fatigue, and stress, providing insightful biofeedback using EEG data.

With seven dry electrodes, five of which are located on the prefrontal cortex, and two temporal lobe sensors, the measured feedback taken in real-time, enables you to drive training programs for various brain challenges of people of all ages: children, adults, or seniors.

For children:
With the SenzeBand 2 and NeeuroOS, we can access their brainwaves in real-time, thus determining if the child is paying attention, which helps understand the child’s mental state in performing tasks. Additionally, we can pick up mental workloads to determine if the child is putting in “brain effort” in performing mental tasks, such as solving math problems or answering comprehension quizzes. Through this feedback, children can go through brain training applications to train themselves and improve their attention. Gamified training, for one, helps improve cognitive functions.

For adults:
There are always issues with stress management, being anxious because of several tasks we need to do at the same time, chronic fatigue, depression, and even burnout. Through EEG monitoring, we can measure and determine our relaxation levels, and with constant training, achieve our desired results. One example is drivers, who suffer fatigue due to the nature of their work. With EEG signals, results will determine their level of mental fatigue and the possible need to rest.

Brain training for seniors:
This is also essential to help manage their brain health, especially with memory issues and anxiety levels. Paired with treatment and rehabilitation programs, they ensure that patients are engaged in mental exercises that monitor and assess their levels of mental states.

NeeuroOS

NeeuroOS provides the platform where users can device solutions to address brain health issues. It also enables software developers to create their own applications, using data that has been provided by NeeuroOS. As such, Digital Mental Health and brain fitness providers can leverage the AI algorithmns in NeeuroOS, and effectively measures different mental states. With such data, you can launch your brain computing solutions easier and quicker than ever before with NeeuroOS.

Better brain health with SenzeBand 2 and NeeuroOS

We can achieve better brain health, through the use of SenzeBand 2 and NeeuroOS, by understanding our brain waves. This may help us to cope with some of the mental challenges we face. Whether you have a child with attention issues, or are an adult coping with daily stressors of life, or have senior parents who are dealing with memory problems, depression or anxiety – knowing that there are brain training solutions lessen our worry with these mental health challenges. The capabilities of reliable and portable EEG devices, like the SenzeBand 2, which are easily accessible, affordable, and easy to use, are what we need in the new normal world we now live in.
